Empowering online magazines to run crowd research and campaigns, data-focused and interactively displayed for evaluation.

Since 2019, Bajour — a newly founded online magazine in Basel — needed a technical partner to take over and develop their early proof-of-concept platform. Over several years, I managed their Kubernetes-based GCP infrastructure, built and maintained frontends, micro services and delivered countless side projects. Below are two key crowd research investigations.

"Wem gehört Basel?" – Crowd Research Tool

A large-scale community-driven investigation to collect ownership data for every building in Basel within a few weeks. The tool integrated seamlessly with existing editorial workflows and included data evaluation and an interactive map. This project was shortlisted for a Swiss Journalist:innenpreis.

"Ist hier noch frei?" – Collaboration with CORRECTIV

This project started after multiple agencies failed to deliver or became unreachable. So, akoda took over the technical lead and full technical rescue and guidance — frontend, backend, video upload extensions, and map integration — and together delivered the project under extremely tight deadlines.

From Natural-Language-Processing with automated transcription to an explorable video archive as web app.

Originally prototyped during a hackathon and later turned into a full web app in collaboration with AnDiCo Lab (Basel). The tool enables interactive exploration of long-form video content using automatic topic segmentation and transcript-based navigation. The entire application works fully client-side, without a backend.

As part of the website relaunch, akoda developed a custom PHP module with granular multi-level filtering, enabling quick access to technical and regulatory documents. I also supported the design & communication agency (almoo, Maja Riegler) with frontend bug fixing and final integration. Knauf AG Switzerland was an exceptionally kind and solution-focused team to work with.

A multi-site architecture with static generation, centralized content management, and event/membership forms. Several institutions now run more than seven individual websites from a single consolidated backend. Design and content provided by almoo (Maja Riegler).
